Six Years

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Today is the sixth anniversary of Manien and I getting married. Still happy! We have actually been together over 15 years! Here are some comics I drew in the month of the wedding.

In other news, there is a new True Loves 3 up today. After I drew it, I thought how goofy it is that I am drawing Zander’s nipples but coyly covering True’s to keep the PG rating I imagine True Loves having. It is pretty family friendly, except for the copious pot smoking.

Weather Fakeouts

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

Each day this week it starts off looking like rain, does not rain. Ends up sunny and summery. Nice (but it means Manien has to water the garden).

New True Loves 3 is up! They are still drinking.

Last night I got myself out to the Drive for the Cloudscape launch for their latest anthology. I’m always happy for an excuse to visit the Drive, and have a pint or two at St. Augustine’s. Boy that is a nice pub. And the energy of the street really made me happy. Also, great to visit with the Cloudscape gang. It was a fun night.

Here are some more of these.

Girlie Drinks

Friday, July 20th, 2012

New True Loves 3 is up! Confession: I have not had anything like a girlie drink in a long time. Headaches and hangovers!

You could watch this.

Earlier in the week I was feeling like this.

But I’m okay now. How about this song instead?

And some more of these…

Picnic on Fire

I feel like I did a lot of drawing the past couple of days. Just drawing away. I never feel like it is as much as I want, but still. Good to draw a lot.

Here is a new True Loves 3.

I got James Kochalka’s SUPERF*CKERS from the library, and maybe it is just the superhero zone my head is in, but I am loving it. Anyhow, here are a couple more Mega-j things.

Low Fi

Friday, June 29th, 2012

I just saw Moonrise Kingdom and predictably loved it. So lovely! It is great to have been alive to see Wes Anderson appear, and to enjoy his movies.

There is a new True Loves 3 up today! Go read it. Are you on Facebook? Do you follow the True Loves group?

Did I mention that I got Bernie Mireault‘s new book To Get Her? It is an interesting darker Jam story. Kind of sad. I love the pauses it takes to let time pass. Just now, I wondered if it was that book that got me doing these Mega-j drawings, since Bernie’s Jammer character was the big inspiration for Jesse and me coming up with Big Red and Ultra-j way back in the day. The low fi superhero.

Mega Summer

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

New True Loves 3 is up! Sometimes I wonder what people think of our un-technological characters. When we were approaching book three, Manien and I decided the time frame was around 2002 – A time of less internet and cell phone permeation. We have been working on this series for something like 12 years now, times have changed!

Vancouver is a little summer-challenged this year. A lot of rain with some lovely sunny days thrown in here and there. I get a little tired of all the whining about it. I remember the first years I spent in Vancouver I always felt like “That was IT?” by the end of summer, so I’m not sure why people here seem so shocked by cool and rainy weather here every year. They would be whining just as much if it actually got hot like it is in Ontario right now.

Last week I was inspired to do some Mega-j “imaginary comic covers.” This week I have a few in various stages of completion.

New True Loves 3 is up!

I feel like there were many things I wanted to tell you, but can I think now what they were? Okay:

1. I’m reading this sci fi book Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. It is kind of blowing my mind to a degree that I find pleasantly surprising.

2. Manien and I watched Mission Impossible one day and the Descendants the next and found Clooney’s greying dad-hair looked so much better on him than Cruise’s desperate dye-job.

3. I got Tom Gauld’s Goliath recently. So good! Funny, beautiful and sad. And thought provoking even!

4. A couple of VanCAF videos. Some nice photos here too. Oh yeah, and this comic Grade Eight that I got at the show was great too.

5. It has been a fairly wet summer so far here in Vancouver Town. A lot of people are bellyaching, but I don’t mind. It means less watering of the garden, and less of Jason bursting into flames as he walks to and from the Dayjob. Today I was enjoying some music that was good for a drizzly day. Sparklehorse. The National. And my soothing music in general these days, Grimes.

6. And hey a new Die Antwoord video! It is a classic family drama in the vein of Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Gonna Take It!

Okay I better stop or I’ll go all night.

New True Loves 3! Tomato party!

Also, just doodling on a Friday night while Manien is at work. I am interested in what you can evoke through limited drawing.

TCAF Bound!

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

It is still a couple of days away, but my head is already all over TCAF.

So before I forget, there is a new True Loves 3 up, featuring the Return of Dirk!

Okay, here is where you can find me at TCAF May 5 and 6. In a special extremely rare appearance, my wife and True Loves co-writer Manien is going to be there too! So come on by and tell her how awesome she is. We will be on the second floor, table 204. This is the first time I’ve had a table up there. It has always seemed so bright and airy, so I’m excited.

TCAF 2012 WHERE AM I?

I have been getting in a convention-y state of mind this week, as I’ve been going through old boxes of zines, magazines and comics and so forth. It is very hard for me to get rid of stuff when I look at it and it reminds me of say that time 13 of us slept in one hotel room at that one SPX. It is like drifting around in a time machine. So this is what my living room floor looked like the past couple of nights.

Zinesorting

Speaking of SPX here is a relic from SPX 2003 I had forgotten. I made a booklet and got people to draw their SPX Memories in it. This was my cover.

Here is some kind of art installation I have been passing a few times a day for the past month. They keep working away on it. I call it Black Plastic Slope with Pylon Line.

The asparagus is up! Here is the aspagus patch just before I harvested our first big feed of the year.

And finally I made a tall salad with some Microgreens. And Manien harvested a bit of our skinny perennial arugula from the garden, so I made some fins.

Superheroes

New True Loves 3 is up! Check it out!

So last weekend was the big comic show and it was super successful and twice as many people came as they expected. So that is good for Vancouver. But it was a superhero show, and really that just isn’t my scene. The superhero crowd don’t want a comic with love in the title, or something about some dude turning 40. They want a rad looking print of Venom. The guy next to me made out like a bandit selling such things. Oh well. I’m looking forward TCAF next week and VanCAF later in the month!

Here is what the show looked like.

Luckily later at the Vancouver Comic Jam there was swenking.
