Good Movies

New True Loves 3. I have been waiting to get to this point in the story! Hey are you on that facebook thing? Did you know there is a True Loves group? Sometimes I put secret behind the scenes facts there!

Also, there is still time to pledge to the Retrofit Comics Kickstarter.

I don’t have any drawings or anything to share today. Manien and I did see the Tree of Life yesterday, which we really enjoyed. Quite a pretty spectacular movie. And then in the evening Manien and I watched Summer in Genoa, which was also great. Both had such a different rhythm from a lot of your regular hollywood movies. Tree of Life made me want to do a comic like that.

Loves and Layouts

New True Loves 3! I seem to have been running a bit behind all week. All this long long week.

Over on the livejournal, there was a question that got me trying to recall how I arrived at the winding-path layout for True Loves online. I suppose it likely had a lot to do with Scott Mccloud and the heady days the infinite canvas and internet experimenting of the early 2000s. But it also had a lot to do with where my head had been going in my minicomics in the late 90s, where I was really into these curving layouts where the reading path on a page was a snake rather than a zigzag. So here is a page from my minicomic Vinegar 10, and a page of True Loves as it looks in printed form.

New True Loves 3! Exciting times in the next few pages…

As I drew I listened to the Nerdists talk to Zooey Deschanel who I forgot all the music and stuff she does and to the WTF talk to Gary Shandling, who was such a cool guy. I am enjoying these two podcasts a great deal for my inking and colouring listening. Also at lunch today I read a little interview with Miranda July and so I am excited about her new movie.

I also got this crazy new monitor that is twice as big as my old one. I am not sure what to do with all this space.

The Retrofit Comics Kickstarter has reached half its goal in the first week, so that is good. Pop on over there and pledge some money if you haven’t already. Here is a sneak peak of what I am rolling around in my head for this Retrofit project.

The Complex

Comics and Kickstarters and things

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Yeah last night it was a bummer to look out across the inlet at the big plume of black smoke coming from downtown. Oh well.

In happier news, here is a new installment of True Loves 3.

And in interesting other news, I am part of this Retrofit Comics thing boxbrown is doing. A 32 page comic a month by a different artist for 17 months. To bring back that old excitement for non-superhero comic fan of having something new to read on a regular basis. Read all about it and pledge money to help get it started here. This will be my first major post-True Loves work!

My Beautiful Book

Finally some new True Loves 3 for you!

I would have scanned some sketches I did on the weekend, for another project I’m working on, but I managed to forget my sketchbook at the jam Saturday night. A friendly fellow jammer took care of it, but in the meantime I feel strange and naked without it!

So instead, here is a picture of me with a book I bought a while ago. I had read an article about this restaurant NOMA which was voted best in the world last year I think, and it sounded neat, and the chef is all into using native grasses and mosses and ingredients. I saw the book in Guelph back in May, and kept thinking I would like to own it. It has lovely different coloured papers, a fold-out map, gorgeous photos and recipes for the insane impossible to make food. Eventually I caved and ordered it online.

In Case of Fire

True Loves is a little behind schedule this week, due to a weekend on the Island and a column for Broken Pencil being due. Hopefully I’ll have something by Friday. Meanwhile…

New True Loves 3 today! Things are heating up?

I mentioned the other day that I have been really enjoying the crazy mashup world of Girl Talk. Watching some live footage on the youtube made me think that the hits mashing was like the grandchild of the disco hits medley of Stars on 45. Let’s compare and contrast…
