Supertimes

New True Loves 3. I seem to have slipped back to one update a week. We’ll never get the story finished at this rate! Oh well. If I beat myself up about not drawing enough I will be miserable ALL THE TIME.

This week my copy of Grant Morrison’s Supergods book arrived. I am a big sucker for the Grant Morrison, so I am quite enjoying his history/examination of superheroes. And it has made me think about my superhero alter ego Mega-j and his changing from a university campus patrolling Ultra-j to Mega-j to endless Halloween costume variations to his current cosmic flameheaded look. I am not sure what I could do with this history, but it has been rolling around in my head all day.

Interviews I have enjoyed this week:
Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips. Still busy and doing all kinds of crazy projects at 50.
Miranda July. She has such a beautiful unusual way about her. I can’t wait to see her new movie “the Future” as I loved loved You Me and Everyone We Know.
Sara Gran. I really enjoyed her Clair Dewitt and the City of the Dead, so I was pleased to also enjoy this interview with her.
Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison. I could happily read a 90 page Comics Journal style conversation between these two.

Here is a Mega-j from three and a half years ago. Read some adventures from what, seven years ago?

Slack Times

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Oh I was a big old slacker on the weekend. And so I am just getting one True Loves 3 up this week. It can be tough, having the day job, feeling the life drained out of me, coming home, trying to summon up the strength to pick up that ink brush. Once I do it, I’m generally saved at that point. I feel myself come back to earth, come back to life. But getting that brush moving can be tough.

Oh that just reminded me that a few hours before the previous Beastie Boys video was making me laugh with tears, this WTF interview with Todd Hanson was making me cry other tears, as I inked. Whew. Heavy duty.

I wanted to write about re-reading Ronin on the weekend and all, but I am just not in the mood for blogging at this moment, so instead here is another very entertaining Beastie Boys video.

Past My Bedtime

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Okay Manien is away for a few days, and here I am not getting comics drawn, staying up too late and so forth. I just watched and greatly enjoyed the movie “Paranoid Park” but instead of going to bed afterward, I got looking at videos, and finally got around to watching this epic Beastie Boys one that everyone was talking about a month or two ago. Holy crap! It made me cry tears of laughter!

Great Dudes of Comics

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Let’s see, what is new this week? New True Loves 3. Just one, because I had a busy weekend playing store, and jail, and pass the motorcycle and so forth. Retrofit comics reached their fundraising goal.

Things I listened to this week: WTF chat with Bobcat Goldthwait. Have you seen his movie World’s Greatest Dad? It is great. Robin Williams is good! Nerdist chat with Neil Gaiman. He just seems like such a great, smart, laid back guy, and in such a good place in his life. Similarly I enjoyed reading this interview with Grant Morrison, who also seems to buzz with smartness and creativity. I am quite looking forward to reading his Supergods book in a week or so.

And here is a drawing I did and threw some colour on.

Farm School

This morning Manien and I had a morning dance party to this song.

This and That

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

New True Loves 3 up today. It was a good one for making me remember my old Commercial Drive neighbourhood. In other comics news, the Retrofit Comics Kickstarter is within $500 of their goal.

I have been reading Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, which is great and grim. My listening material has been mostly the WTF podcast. I find that the conversations Marc Maron has with his guests are interesting even if I don’t know the comedian he is talking to. He tends to dive in pretty deep. So even though I don’t know the work of Christopher Titus or Nick Thune, I enjoyed listening to them. And then Ed recommended the one with Dave Foley from Kids in the Hall, which was funny, informative and pretty heartbreaking.

Spanish Day

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

New True Loves 3 went up yesterday! This episode will make an impact on you. A deep impact.
The Retrofit Comics Kickstarter is less than $1000 from its goal! Go Retrofit!

On the weekend Manien and I had a Spanish themed day. So she made delicious Spanish inspired food, we drank wine and beer from Spain and watched a couple of Pedro Almodovar movies (Broken Embraces and Live Flesh). It was a fun day! Below you can see what we ate.

And who was this lil’ guy hiding in Manien’s breakfast the next morning?

Canada Day ii

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Three Broken Social Scene videos to celebrate Canada Day. One groovy, one thinking about this and that, and then one kind of funny that is something about forgiveness.

Also, North Vancouver was just a-hoppin’ when Manien and I went down the hill just now. Who knew?

An Extra Day

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Having an extra day off has given me time to finally get around to putting my Year 40 comics in the store on my site. So that is good. 280 pages!

Manien and I may even do some True Loves writing in a bit. But that will require wine. More wine.

Long Weekend!

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Happy early Canada Day. Happy long weekend for me!

New True Loves 3 went up today.
Have I mentioned the True Loves app lately? If you have an ipad, go to the app store and look for True Loves. You can buy and read the first two books. Looking for true love in the app store, sounds like a song that would be really dated really fast.

I don’t really have much to add. Here is Luna singing a nice song at Zulu.
