True Loves 3 – Behind the Scenes
I took the week off True Loves 3 to get things ready for TCAF, and to hang out with a visiting friend. Did you notice?
I meant to post these a couple of weeks ago, but here is some behind the scenes business. Secrets of the Making of True Loves 3. True and Eliza walking down Granville Street. We had decided they could be headed to the Granville Room. Google Street view inconveniently did not cover this section of Granville, so I went downtown and took some photos for reference, to cover the pair walking north on the west side of the street.
As I moved along through the photos I thought these columns in front of Tom Lee music would be fun and easy to draw.
But then when I went to draw the next page, with True and Eliza (and the baby) at the Granville Room, I looked back at my reference pics for an exterior shot of the bar, and realized that if they had been in front of Tom Lee headed north… they were already PAST the Granville Room!
Now, I realized that no one would ever notice this detail. The backgrounds were only specific in my mind. No one would be all Whoa whoa whoa! I even considered throwing in a panel for the online version of them turning around going “Oh maybe we should just go there…” But my sense of what is right in my comics demanded that I find somewhere else for them to go. I wasted hours and eventually settled on Taf’s Cafe. I even debated as to whether or not they would want to go there, as it is almost right under where True’s imaginary store is. But at that point I needed to get moving so that is where they went.
