More Debris

Friday, December 17th, 2010

I was in Ontario for a quick spin last week. Managed to avoid the seriously bad weather, but did have a good blast of winter proper. Even went tobogganing with my brother and his kids. It was great to see the family but not nearly long enough. And now I am back in the mild grey drizzly world of Vancouver.

While I was away, and especially when I was on the five hour flights to and from Toronto, I did some drawings. I was inspired to return to my series of drawings of the little astronaut guy in the house of debris. You can see them all here.

A Drawing and Stuff

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

I have had a nice decadent four day weekend. Some visiting, some wandering around downtown, some flaking out, a decent amount of drawing. Some friends have been doing neat things: Josue did a drawing each day in October and had some fun colouring them. Brian has been making funny little songs about people on Twitter, including one for me! Simon is working on a comic about a guy and a gorilla. Don’t forget to keep up with the November comics. The Year 40 Project is just over a week from completion! Here is a drawing I did while hanging out with Josue.

Old Drawings

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

I am having a lazy weekend here in North Vancouver, nowhere near SPX in Maryland. To entertain myself I have been scanning some old drawings of D&D adventures from around 1990. You can see them here. I have also posted the first portion of my YEAR 40 August comics here, for now.

Black Momba Tells

Oh that Albert

I got to continuing my leisurely crawl through Twin Peaks last night and did a drawing of this classic confrontation. The only part of drawing Sheriff Truman that interested me was his hair. And the wrinkles on his shirt.

Me and the Major

the majors vision

Oh Major Briggs, I’m sorry I don’t draw you as well as you deserve. But anyways, this scene, with the Major telling Bobby about his vision is just a lovely quiet little moment that makes me mist up every time. Sadly I don’t think this relationship was really ever carried forth much in the rest of the series.

Sick Day – Twin Peaks

Since I am loafing around the house sick, what am I doing? Watching/drawing Twin Peaks!

More Twin Peaks

Here are a couple I drew last night, and one from tonight.

First we have Norma and Big Ed at the Double R.

And then a kind of bad one of Audrey dancing there. She looks a little like she should maybe be in the Black Lodge.

And finally Major Briggs and his son Bobby having a discussion about Bobby’s feelings, in advance of a funeral.

the Briggs Family

I would like to pause to add that Major Briggs is one of my favourite characters on the show. He is so calm and mysterious. So I should at some point attempt to do another drawing of him that doesn’t look so creepy.

Superbirdsize Me

superbirds

Why am I drawing Hawkgirl and friends? We were having breakfast yesterday, and I was watching the birds and got thinking, as I do sometimes, about what it would be like if people came in as varied sizes as birds. So you would have your sparrow sized person, then four times as big would be your robin sized person, and then several times bigger than them the crow sized person, who would be like as tall as a house. So I was trying to apply that to the superheroes here. And then how big would a human be, compared to say a Black Canary?

I did a short story on this idea for Don’t Touch Me once.

We the people, of Sweet Haven

Sweet Haven

As I did this drawing, I felt like I had attempted the exact same drawing in the past. With similarly unsatisfactory results. Oh well! On the other hand it did get me thinking about how I love a good evocative setting, and a place where everyone in the town is a specific character (see also: Twin Peaks).

A Movie Drawing

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Phil McAndrew is having a contest, getting people to draw a scene from a movie. So I chose Punchdrunk Love. I am only sort of happy with how it came out. Very much like what is in my head, but sort of blah as a drawing. Oh well!
